hey mona, you are hard to respond to. I realized that if you respond to comments in blogger through email they may not get through to certain bloggers. I thought I had your email around somewhere but I cannot find it. Hopefully you'll see the comment from me on your blog.
I like your post about the hijab and how it has become misinterpreted as a symbol of oppression in our present time. The similarities between female head dress throughout the major religions was also another excellent point. People seem to feel comfortable making grand and general statements about Islam based on factors that have little to do with the religion itself. They see a few people using the religion incorrectly as a means to commit acts of terror or form regional governments and they feel that this becomes representative of the whole religion. Why they don't choose to read the Koran or speak to a Muslim so that they can form a real, informed opinion is beyond me.
There has been a good deal of debate about the role of women in Islam, and historians have pointed out that Mohammed himself felt that women's rights during his time needed to be greatly broadened. The fact does remain that if one looks at text alone, the bible by far is one of the most oppressive documents written in that it does subjugate women as well as condone slavery. Anyways, I enjoyed your post and also hope to see more art from you on your blog. You should keep it up.
